Locational signaling and agglomeration

چکیده
Agglomeration can be caused by asymmetric information and a locational signaling effect: The location choice of workers signals their productivity to potential employers. The cost of a signal is the cost of housing at a location. When workers’ marginal utility of housing is negatively correlated with their productivity, skill-biased technological change causes a core-periphery bifurcation where the agglomeration of high-skill workers eventually constitutes a unique stable equilibrium. When workers’ marginal utility of housing and their productivity are positively correlated, skill-biased technological improvements will never result in a core-periphery equilibrium. Location can at best be an approximate rather than a precise sieve for highskill workers. (JEL Classifications: D51; D82; R13)

Outsourcing in the Innovation Process: Locational and Strategic Determinants
There is now substantial evidence that locational and agglomeration influences can have a significant positive effect on innovation performance. Networking and boundary-spanning activities are also increasingly recognised as important contributors to innovation success. This paper attempts to discover whether these factors are linked: in particular, is there any link between plant location, agg...
متن کاملLocational competition and Agglomeration: The Role of Government Spending
With the completion of EMU, tax competition and, more in general, locational competition is high on the EU policy agenda. In contrast to the standard neo-classical reasoning, recent advances in the theory of trade and location have shown that tax competition does not necessarily lead to a ‘race to the bottom’. In these recent discussions the relevance of government spending as an instrument for...
متن کاملInternationalisation of Economic Policy Research Paper 2002 / 33 Multinationals ’ location choice , agglomeration economies and public incentives
We study the regional location of multinationals in Ireland since the 1970s by focusing on the role played by agglomeration economies and public incentives intent on dispersing industrial activity to the more disadvantaged areas of Ireland. We find that regional policy has only been effective in attracting low-tech firms to the disadvantaged areas during the time when there was a much more lais...
متن کاملSpatial Analysis of Effective Factors on Distribution of Economic: Activities in 14 Zones of Esfahan Municipality
In recent years, the studies of location play a key role in success and stability of economic activities. Location studies are under consideration in both national and international levels. Meanwhile, identification of goals and methods of solving location problems have significant importance. The purpose of this paper is to examine spatial distribution of economic activities in 14 zones of Esf...
متن کاملThe persistent effects of place - based policy :
We show that temporary place-based subsidies generate persistent effects on economic density. As our design allows us to control for agglomeration economies, we attribute an important role to policy-induced locational advantage (e.g. capital structures) in explaining persistent spatial patterns of economic activity. With regard to distributional implications, we show that subsidies have capital...
